Education and Experience Requirements – At a minimum, CIA agents in Minnesota are expected to have a bachelor’s degree in any major and three years of work experience in criminal investigations.

In conjunction with the CIA, the University of Minnesota offers an undergraduate scholarship program for interested and qualified students. If not, new recruits must first take this two month long training in basic investigational and physical skills necessary for agents.

Former CIA Director Hails from Minnesota

For those who may think that Minnesota is far removed from the CIA, think again. One of the CIA’s former directors hailed from Minnesota. William Egan Colby, who died in 1996, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and rose to become Director of the CIA under President Richard Nixon in 1973. Colby served in this capacity until 1976.

Colby’s background included graduation from Princeton University with an A.B., serving in the U.S. Army and Office of Strategic Services overseas, earning a law degree from Columbia University, and joining the CIA as an agent shortly after its inception in 1947. Colby’s success in the CIA proves that Minnesotans can, and do, acquire CIA jobs, up to and including the highest position within the agency.
